Des Moines Resident Carol Whitmore Breaks Barriers as First Woman and Iowan to Lead Veterans of Foreign Wars

Carol Whitmore of Des Moines has made history as the first woman and first Iowan to become national commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

Elected on August 13, 2025, at the VFW’s 126th National Convention in Columbus, Ohio, Whitmore’s achievement is being celebrated as a breakthrough for both women and the state of Iowa.

With a distinguished 36-year Army career—including deployment in Operation Iraqi Freedom—Whitmore has earned high honors like the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star.

She is also a retired nurse and graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and Hawkeye Community College.

Whitmore has pledged to champion the Major Richard Star Act for wounded veterans and continue the VFW’s commitment to POW/MIA recovery.

A homecoming celebration in downtown Des Moines will honor her leadership and dedication to advancing veterans’ rights.

Whitmore’s story is inspiring a new generation committed to service and community.
